Global sea levels could rise by up to 6.2 FEET by 2100, plunging entire cities underwater - so, is your hometown at risk?
The idea of entire cities being plunged underwater might sound like the plot of the latest science fiction blockbuster. But it could become a reality in just 75 years, according to a terrifying new study. Scientists from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, have predicted that global sea levels could rise by a staggering 6.2 feet (1.9 metres) by 2100 if carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions continue to increase. 'The high-end projection of 1.9 metres underscores the need for decision-makers to plan for critical infrastructure accordingly,' said Dr Benjamin Grandey, lead author of the study. If global sea levels were to rise by 6.2ft (1.9 metres), towns and cities around the world could be plunged underwater - including several in the UK.

Are we at the dawn of the AI-created city? - Raconteur
Just over a century since The Manifesto of Futurist Architecture declared the city must be rethought and rebuilt like an "immense and tumultuous shipyard" – "everywhere dynamic", and the house like a "gigantic machine", it may be that author Antonio Sant'Elia had things the wrong way around. Because although his machine-fetishising sketches inspired our common vision of a science-fiction future – as in Fritz Lang's 1927 film Metropolis, with its technological Tower of Babel an imposing centrepiece – it might be the gigantic machines that are making our houses. Architecture and AI visionaries – forming especially around MIT in the 1950s, through to the later work of MIT Media Lab co-founder Nicholas Negroponte – and design pioneers have long thought about automating the creation of our environments. Now the technology is catching up to their ideas, and a radical shift into AI-assisted design is taking hold, with implications that could radically transform the form, feel and function of the places we inhabit. Completely automated design is not quite there yet. This crop of generative, AI-assisted tools is rather new.

O2 expands its 5G coverage in the UK to more than 150 locations
O2 has rolled out its 5G network in 53 new towns and cities across the UK, pulling ahead of its rival EE to become the nation's biggest provider of ultra-fast mobile internet. The new locations include Birmingham, Durham and Portsmouth, bringing O2's total number of locations with 5G to 150. The network also allows for larger amounts of data to be transferred at once, which could one day help power technologies such as fully autonomous cars. Marshaling artificial intelligence in the fight against Covid-19
Artificial intelligence could play a decisive role in stopping the Covid-19 pandemic. To give the technology a push, the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab is funding 10 projects at MIT aimed at advancing AI's transformative potential for society. The research will target the immediate public health and economic challenges of this moment. But it could have a lasting impact on how we evaluate and respond to risk long after the crisis has passed. The 10 research projects are highlighted below.

The UK towns and cities worse off than 100 years ago
Over the past 100 years new industries and new ways of working have divided the UK's towns and cities into haves and have-nots. Some have managed to make the transition, while others have been unable to recreate the boom they enjoyed in the early 20th Century. Why have some cities managed to stride ahead, while others have fallen by the wayside? Funding, infrastructure and opportunity all play a part, marking the difference between the places able to adapt and those forced into a cycle of low-paid, low-skilled jobs. In the decades after World War Two, London's economy fell into long-term decline.

Britain will have 'self-repairing' cities by 2050
Britain's crumbling roads could be fixed by robots capable of filling in a pothole in a minute, scientists have predicted. An army of autonomous road vehicles or drones could one day be prowling around towns and cities identifying cracks in roads and pavements before a pothole develops. In just one minute, a robot with an attached 3D printer will be able to spray asphalt into a crack in the road to repair it. And the robots will even work anti-social hours, completing their work at night to ensure roads to not have to be closed down during the day. Leeds City Council is already working with a team of engineers and designers to pioneer the concept of'self-repairing cities'.

Automation to take 1 in 3 jobs in UK's northern centres, report finds
Workers in Mansfield, Sunderland and Wakefield are at the highest risk of having their jobs taken by machines, according to a report warning that automation stands to further widen the north-south divide. Outside of the south of England, one in four jobs are at risk of being replaced by advances in technology – much higher than the 18% average for wealthier locations closer to London. Struggling towns and cities in the north and the Midlands are most exposed. A total of 3.6m UK jobs could be replaced by machines. The Centre for Cities thinktank says almost one-third of the jobs in the Nottinghamshire town of Mansfield, which is home to the Sports Direct warehouse, are involved in lines of work under threat as robots begin to replace humans in the years up to 2030.

Deliveroo rival UberEats to expand across more than 40 UK towns and cities in 2017
UberEats, the food delivery service introduced by ride sharing giant Uber, will expand across more than 40 towns and cities in the UK before the end of the year as it continues to compete with rivals Deliveroo and JustEat. Uber, whose car-hailing app has caused upheaval in the taxi industry, disrupted the takeaway market in London when it launched UberEats in June last year. The app is now also available in Manchester and Birmingham and more than 1 million customers have downloaded it since its launch, according to the company. "It's clear from the response we've seen in London, Manchester and Birmingham that there's huge appetite from people to order food at the touch of a button from their favourite local restaurants," Jambu Palaniappan, regional manager for Europe, Middle East and Africa at UberEats, said. "We're really excited about the future of the business which is why we're investing heavily in an ambitious plan to launch the app in at least 40 towns and cities in the UK by the end of the year," he added.
